What do you call an artist who replicates famous paintings?
I’ve been looking online for the correct term, I’m not sure if there really is one. I’m writing an essay and I need to know what the correct term would be for an artist who replicates famous paintings and sells them. By that I don’t mean someone who tries to paint famous paintings and pass them off as the original, simply an artist who creates and sells replicas.

Molly Larkey’s The Revolutionary playfully incorporates elements of formalist abstraction with its symbolic subject matter. Constructed from a variety of materials, Larkey gives her sculpture a rainbow treatment of brightly coloured paint, each rough hewn component compiling as a topsy-turvy monument, inciting both Modernist art history and hippie psychedelia. With her theatrical assemblage, Larkey frames [...]

Carsten Nicolai is an artist using various media, such as sound, image, sculpture and computers as hybrid tools in order to research the “codification of the world”. Carsten Nicolai’s work questions creativity, coincidence and artistic creative power. A lot of his works are directly linked with the natural sciences.

Jörg Immendorff’s career reassesses an artist whose period of notoriety in America lasted a relatively short time in the 1980’s. This was partly a matter of mistaken identity – he was too closely linked with the neo-expressionist and new image (?) bandwagon prevalent at the time. His connection to direct contemporaries who gained mega-celebrity status, [...]

Born in 1945, Immendorff was of the generation that experienced post-war disillusionment that politicized every waking moment. As a student in the 1960s, he faced the task of examining Germany’s tragic history and its fraught relationship with modernity. This forced him to devise a balancing act between eras.Jörg Immendorff’s large canvases are often fraught with [...]

forger?

A ghost. I would probably write a story about the ghost who came back to life and reclaimed it’s domain property and caused a big fuss on the world scene by making such a bold appearance.

You could use the term “copyist” in this context.

I’m pretty sure the verb is “replication” but I don’t know if that makes the person who does it a painting “replicator”? Not sure, I know what you’re talking about but I don’t know what the term is. Would your professor/teacher know?

Ha ha…Maber’s answer made me think of replicants from Blade Runner.
A printer perhaps? I know that replicated paintings are sometimes called prints. Otherwise, a replicator would suffice.
